Honouring the Past: Volunteer Monument Cleaning Day at Mount Calvary Cemetery

Four years ago, we began a tribute to Bill Campbell: the Bill Campbell Memorial Volunteer Clean Up Day. Each year, we select a cemetery in one of the communities we serve and spend a day giving the older sections some extra TLC. Bill Campbell spent his life dedicated to family, to his team at Campbell Monument, to the communities we serve, and to making a lasting impact on the monument industry. His legacy continues to shape the way we work and the way we care.

Some of the major contributions he made continue to set Campbell Monument apart today. The Campbell-Craft Guarantee, officially introduced in 1971, remains the only guarantee of its kind in the monument industry—an enduring promise to the families we serve. Just as significantly, in 1984, Bill made the extraordinary decision to sell the company to its employees. We’re proud to carry that legacy forward, remaining committed to beautiful, handcrafted monuments, to traditional techniques, and to being a positive and contributing presence in the communities we call home.

This year’s event took place on Saturday, May 24th, 2025, when a dedicated team of staff and volunteers from Campbell Monument gathered at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Trenton, Ontario for a full day of monument cleaning, light restoration, and meaningful community service.

Despite the rain, spirits remained high. Over two dozen volunteers rolled up their sleeves to scrub and power wash several hundred granite and marble monuments. Flat markers were dug up and relevelled; a few upright monuments were reset. Armed with buckets, gloves, scrub brushes, power washers, and a lot of heart, we worked across the cemetery with one shared purpose: to honour those at rest by preserving their memorials with care and respect.

A special thanks goes to Don O’Neill, caretaker of Mount Calvary Cemetery and to St. Peter’s Church, for his help in coordinating the day. His deep knowledge of the cemetery and his ongoing commitment to its care made a real difference in the success of the event.

We were also deeply honoured by the visit from Mayor Jim Harrison and his wife, Jane, who came out on a rainy Saturday morning to say hello and share a few words of support. Their presence meant a great deal to everyone on site, and we appreciated them taking the time to recognize the work being done.

Throughout the day, every corner of the Campbell team was in motion. Our trucks and trailers—fully loaded with equipment, D/2 solution, water tanks, and supplies—served as a mobile base of operations and, at lunchtime, a makeshift BBQ station. Hot dogs, burgers, and coffee helped keep everyone warm and fueled for the afternoon ahead. The rain never let up, but it didn’t dampen the mood.

Of course, this day wasn’t just about cleaning stone. It was about connection. We shared laughs in the drizzle, paused to read names and epitaphs etched decades or centuries ago, and left the cemetery in better shape than we found it. For those few hours, surrounded by history and hard work, we were reminded why our work matters—not just to our customers, but to the wider community and to those who came before us.

Thank you to everyone who gave their time and effort, and to the families whose loved ones’ monuments we were honoured to care for. We’re proud to continue this tradition, and we look forward to carrying it into more communities in the years to come.
