Belleville Firefighter’s Memorial

At Campbell Monument, we take great pride in helping communities create meaningful tributes to those who have dedicated their lives to service. One project that holds a special place in our hearts is the Firefighters’ Memorial, recently completed in partnership with the Belleville Fire Department.

From the beginning, the design of the memorial was shaped through close collaboration between our design team and Fire Chief Monique Belair. Chief Belair brought a clear vision and deep commitment to the project, ensuring that every element of the memorial space would stand as a lasting tribute to the firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in their service. Her goal was to create a space where families, colleagues, and community members could reflect, remember, and honour those who gave their lives in the line of duty.

Supporting this vision, Captain Mark Shannon worked closely with Chief Belair to help shape the final concept of the memorial space, including selecting historical photographs now featured on the fire station wall, which serve as a poignant backdrop to the memorial. These images help tell the story of significant fire-related incidents in Belleville’s history.

Equally important to the overall impact is the surrounding memorial garden. Designed by Rowland Cave-Brown-Cave of the City of Belleville, the landscape design was created with intention—each flower variety telling a part of the story. Most notably, Firefighter’s Hybrid 9-11 Tea Roses which have been planted in memory of each firefighter lost in the line of duty, adding a deeply personal and symbolic layer to the space.

The memorial itself includes a striking feature, a section of steel girder from the World Trade Center—a powerful symbol of resilience and unity that connects our community to the broader firefighting community across North America. A bronze casting of a traditional leather firefighter’s helmet, the Firefighter’s Prayer, and the names of those who gave their lives in service all add to the emotional depth of the memorial. The memorial is crafted from steeled Light Barre granite and was designed for both durability and visual impact. The sloped sides of the granite, inspired by the 9/11 Memorial in New York City, allow for bold engraving and reflect a modern yet respectful tone.

Set within the newly landscaped garden beside the Belleville Fire Station, the memorial is both a place of quiet remembrance and a visible reminder of courage and sacrifice. It serves the community today and will inspire generations to come.

We are incredibly honoured to have played a part in bringing this tribute to life and grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such a dedicated team from the Belleville Fire Department and the City of Belleville.
