A Brief History of
Campbell Monument Company... In the late 1800's, Quinte area native John
Campbell joined his uncle's monument company in Stirling, Ontario,
where he applied his skills to learn the business. Following his
apprenticeship, he founded his own monument company in Trenton, Ontario,
in the early 1900's. His son, Arnold, joined him in the family business, and
quickly became a skilled stonecarver.
Arnold Campbell had
sound ideas about product quality and a determination to offer monuments
distinctive for outstanding quality. Aware of potential for product
improvement, he hired a master stonecarver from Ireland. The business prospered
and, eventually, a decision was made to relocate to Belleville, Ontario.
In 1930, Arnold Campbell opened his company in a converted blacksmith's shop
on Bridge St. W.
in Belleville.
The staff consisted of two full-time and one part-time employee.
In 1951, Arnold's son William
(Bill) Campbell came to work for the company, eventually he would have
controlling interest. With his own unique ideas about running a business,
Bill Campbell, in a bold move, gave each of the employees a share of the
company and made each of them directors. Since then Campbell Monument
has been an employee owned company.
In 1989 the
company moved to new, expanded facilities, on highway #2 at Wallbridge-Loyalist Rd.
Today it has 28 employees and several part-time employees. A staff of fine artists and graphic
designers works closely with memorial consultants and clients to ensure
continuance of the distinctive, quality monuments that have become the Campbell trademark.
In addition to its Belleville
offices and production facilities, the Campbell Monument Company has full
service sales offices in Pembroke, Lindsay, Cobourg, and Renfrew, and a full compliment of representatives
throughout Eastern Ontario.
